- Torbay, Devon, Torquay
- Full Time
- MPS / UPS / TLR (depending on experience)

As a result of a promotion we have a position for a Teacher of English and with the opportunity for a TLR as our English Primary Transition Lead to join us from September 2026. Whilst we appreciate the closing date is fast approaching we welcome potential candidates to visit the school to find out more before the interview date (22nd May). We encourage applications from teachers at all stages of their career.
Torquay Academy’s results have improved dramatically over the past few years thanks to our brilliant teachers. We know that the results can improve further and we are looking for people who are committed, passionate and highly motivated to join our team.
We are looking for an exceptional primary, special or secondary trained colleague to join us to support in the development of our Key Stage 3 curriculum, specialise in teaching those children who are behind with their age related expectations and develop literacy across the school. We have a great respect for the work of our colleagues in all phases and settings and the work they do to develop the reading skills of our learners from early years through to Key Stage 2. Our head of department is currently a governor at a local primary school, and has witnessed first had the blood, sweat and tears that are invested into a primary classroom. We believe that the right candidate will bring an additional layer of expertise to our excellent team, and facilitate the next stage in the development of our rigorous and carefully sequenced curriculum.
We have a number of primary trained colleagues who have joined us at Torquay Academy in English and maths, and they have enjoyed the opportunity to teach a subject in greater depth. Some have gone on to teach GCSE due to the level of expertise they have gained. They would all welcome the opportunity to talk to potential candidates about their role and what a typical day as a secondary teacher would look like.
Our English department has proven itself to be one of the most effective and successful comprehensive departments in the South West. Alongside the strength of our classroom practitioners, underpinning these successful results is a well developed academic curriculum which our teachers are highly invested in and are passionate about delivering. A collaborative approach to centralised planning has meant that our teachers have the best of both worlds - the ability to shape and develop a curriculum they believe in and outstanding resources they can shape to suit their individual classes. We believe that all children, regardless of background and past school experience, are capable of understanding and learning the top-grade concepts, ideas, and theories needed to transform them into capable and knowledgeable critics and readers.
In our department, you will be supported in your development both as a teacher and as a subject specialist. You will be responsible for the expert delivery of a carefully sequenced curriculum and, because resources are centrally produced, given the time and space to become a master of your craft and your subject.
We believe in effective discipline and support teachers with a strong pastoral team and centralised behaviour systems. We work hard to reduce unnecessary workload so that our teachers can focus on teaching great lessons. We invest in the professional development of all of our staff through 1-to-1 coaching, leadership development and high-quality CPD. We know that a world class school can only be built by having the very best teachers and you will be working with colleagues who share a passion for teaching. If you join us you will be signing up to the belief that “everyone succeeds” and that “every student who joins Torquay Academy is capable of going on to university”. It is important you share our goals and values.
We believe students of all backgrounds achieve most highly when the knowledge and concepts required to succeed are made explicit to them, and revisited throughout their journey across the key stages. We believe that strong and well structured modelling of analysis and critical vocabulary enables independence and have been excited by the number of students who choose to go on to study our subjects at A Level and beyond. If you would like to work in a department which transforms the life chances of the children of Torbay, and would be equally committed to this end, then we would love to hear from you.
Benefits of working at Torquay Academy include:
- Priority admission to the Academy for secondary places
