Torbay Council's Educational Psychology Service is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Assistant Educational Psychologist to join our innovative and supportive team. This is an exciting opportunity to gain high-quality practical experience while preparing for future professional training as an Educational Psychologist.
Working alongside experienced Educational Psychologists, you will support the delivery of psychological services for children and young people aged 0-25 across Torbay. You'll contribute to assessments, consultations, interventions, training, project work and service development activities that make a genuine difference to children, families and educational settings.
About the Role
As an Assistant Educational Psychologist, you will:
- Support psychological assessment, consultation and intervention work under professional supervision.
- Work collaboratively with children, young people, families, schools, colleges and partner agencies.
- Contribute to Torbay's innovative inclusion and neurodiversity initiatives, including our Experts at Hand model.
- Assist with Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA) programmes and workforce development activities.
- Support research, project work, evaluation and service improvement initiatives.
- Develop your own professional knowledge and experience in preparation for doctoral training in Educational Psychology.
About You
We are looking for someone who:
- Holds an honours degree in Psychology and is eligible for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership with the British Psychological Society.
- Has experience working with children and young people.
- Has an interest in educational psychology, inclusion and SEND.
- Is an excellent communicator who can build positive relationships with families and professionals.
- Has strong analytical, organisational and ICT skills.
- Is committed to equality, inclusion and reflective professional practice.

Skills
Essential:
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build effective relationships with children, families and professionals.
- Ability to gather, analyse and summarise information from multiple sources.
- Ability to undertake observations, assessments and interventions under supervision and where training has been given.
- Effective organisational skills, including the ability to manage priorities and meet deadlines.
- Ability to work collaboratively within multi-agency environments.
- This role requires the ability to fulfil all spoken aspects of the role with confidence and fluency in English.
Knowledge
Essential:
- Psychological knowledge meeting the Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership/Registration requirements of the British Psychological Society.
- Knowledge of psychological theories relevant to learning, development, behaviour and wellbeing.
- Understanding of SEND legislation, the SEND Code of Practice and inclusive practice.
- Understanding of safeguarding responsibilities and procedures.
- Knowledge of child and adolescent development.
Experience & Qualifications
Essential:
- Honours Degree in Psychology (2:1 or above preferred) or equivalent qualification conferring Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership/Registration with the British Psychological Society.
- Eligibility to apply for Doctoral training in Educational Psychology.
- Experience of working with children and young people aged 0–25.
- Experience of applying psychological knowledge within educational, community or related settings.
- Experience of working collaboratively with families and professionals.
