Use of AI in Our Recruitment Processes
Our Approach to Using AI Digital Tools
At Devon County Council, we are committed to recruitment processes that are fair, inclusive, and transparent. We want every applicant to have the opportunity to present their skills and experience in a way that works best for them.
Fairness and accessibility
We recognise that digital and AI tools can be helpful in improving accessibility.
Our focus is on creating an inclusive recruitment process, where everyone can perform at their best.
We encourage applicants to use appropriate AI tools where they:
- Support accessibility needs
- Help you clearly communicate your experience and skills
- Improve your confidence in applying
Using AI or digital tools in the completion of your application
You are welcome to use AI or digital tools to support your application. This might include:
- Spellcheckers or grammar tools
- Accessibility software, such as screen readers or dictation tools
- AI tools to help structure or refine your answer
Using these tools will not disadvantage you. What matters most is:
- The quality and relevance of your examples
- How well you demonstrate the essential criteria
- That your application reflects your own experience and knowledge
What we expect from applicants
If you use AI tools, we ask that you:
- Ensure your application is accurate and represents your own experience
- Avoid copying generic or overly polished responses that do not reflect your personal knowledge or working style
- Include evidence and examples that you could talk confidently about at an interview
How we use AI at the shortlisting stage of recruitment
Currently, Devon County Council does not use AI to assess or shortlist applications. This helps ensure that every applicant is assessed fairly and consistently.
- All applications are reviewed by trained recruiting managers
- Decisions are based on the published essential criteria for each role
- Shortlisting is carried out using the evidence you provide
- During interviews, we will explore your experience and understanding in more detail.
A final tip
AI tools can help you get started, but the strongest applications are those that:
- Use specific, real examples
- Are clearly tailored to the role
- Reflect your own voice and experience
