Our Team Managers make a vital contribution to the delivery of high-quality social care services. About the role
Our Children and Families teams are responsible for managing child-in-need and child protection cases as well as cases in legal proceedings and looked after children. The casework is varied, and you will be working creatively to promote positive long-term change.
As a Team Manager, you will embed a high-performance consistent culture by helping your team to continually develop their skills so they can achieve the best outcomes for our children, young people, and their families. Through reflective supervision meetings with your team, you’ll champion their personal and professional growth. Alongside your role as a people manager, you will provide oversight on all children and young people in your defined area, ensuring quality standards are maintained and championing restorative practice, working with children, families, and young people to reduce risks, build on strengths and achieve positive outcomes together.

‘I joined DCC in 2016 as an overseas social worker having worked in Zimbabwe and South Africa. I was in the children and families team based at Taw view and this was the perfect start for my career in the UK as I was fully supported by my manager, the Academy and my supportive colleagues.
I worked with a very experienced team and a team manager who I describe as an “expert” in developing practitioners that by the end of 2020 I felt prepared and confident to step up to become an advanced social worker. The support from team manager further emboldened me to apply and become a member of the National Advisory Forum with Social work England.
The step into management from social work practice was both a personal and professional challenge and I decided to become a Team Manager in March 2022.
A team manager knows each member of their team and their strengths, weaknesses and career aspirations and supports them to become best versions of themselves. The manager creates an environment where individual abilities are harnessed to support team objectives to improve the safety and well-being of children and families in Devon.
The role of a team manager is hugely rewarding responsibility; supporting social workers to achieve positive outcomes for people with lived experience, reflecting on practice in supervision, encouraging staff as they develop and grow as practitioners, and building positive teams where good social work practice can flourish.’
We are on an exciting and ambitious journey of cultural change in continuing to embed restorative and relational ways of working. We believe that for the vast majority of families, the family home is the best place by far for children to live, with local, place-based support that includes help and support at the earliest opportunity from us and our partners. Together, we've worked hard to get to know individual children better - understanding who they are and their needs, so we can implement appropriate interventions.

You will have a strong understanding of safeguarding with significant post-qualifying experience gained within statutory social work. You will have the following skills:
- a social work qualification and registered with Social Work England
- experience of supervising and mentoring social workers and students
- experience of leading and managing change within teams, which is founded on engagement and co-design with families, partners and your team
- a good understanding of children’s legislation and process
- demonstrable experience of promoting good practice that improves outcomes for children, and an understanding of offering high support and high challenge to get the best out of your team.
