Magdalen Court School provides education for approximately 110 pupils with special educational needs. The focus for the school is to support pupils with high levels of anxiety and specific learning difficulties including autism.

Reporting to: Business Manager
Job Purpose including main duties and responsibilities:
At the direction of the School Business Manager, to assist with the provision of high quality, cost-effective maintenance, security, Health & Safety and cleanliness of the school premises and grounds, ensuring that staff, pupils and visitors have a clean, safe and well-maintained environment. Whilst the post holder is expected to carry out ‘hands on’ maintenance duties, there will also be some administration within this role, such as Health & Safety policies, risk assessments and related site documentation through OSHENS.
It is expected that the post holder will be on site for 25 hours per week with an expectation that leave will be taken during the school holidays in consultation with the School Business Manager.
Main responsibilities
General caretaking and maintenance services
• To assist with the day-to-day maintenance requirements of the school are met and that repairs and improvements requested by staff are logged, organised and delivered within appropriate timescales.
• To assist with minor repairs, internal decorations, and improvements to the school building are undertaken directly where possible or through negotiation with contractors.
• To assist with assessing other repair work and where appropriate produce specifications and obtain tenders and quotations from suitable contractors.
• To assist with monitoring that all building projects and repair works are completed to the appropriate standards, within agreed timescales and budgets.
• The porterage of furniture, equipment and supplies as required, including setting up hall for assemblies and events.
• Maintaining paths, steps and playground free from leaves, snow and litter and ensuring they are in safe condition for use.
• Monitoring of heating systems, fire protection equipment and other services.
• To assist with monitoring that the buildings and grounds are cleaned and maintained in an efficient and effective manner to the specified standards.
• Take part in training, where necessary, to carry out duties effectively.
• To maintain flexible times of work by changing start and finish times when required by mutual agreement with the school Business Manager.
• Any other duties of a similar level or nature that may be required in support of the day-to-day operation of the school.
Security
• To assist with monitoring that the school’s burglar and fire alarms are functioning properly, liaising with the security company if necessary.
• Hold keys for site and assist with managing the security of the premises and its contents.
• Possibility of rare out-of-hours emergency call-outs and making safe any breach of security.
• To recommend to the School Business Manager any suitable and appropriate improvements to the security of the premises and to report any breaches of security.
• To ensure that the site is secured before leaving the premises.
Health & Safety
• Knowledge of the Health and Safety at Work Regulations and comply with its requirements in all aspects of the work. Where required - training will be provided.
• Ensure that the policies and procedures relating to Health and Safety are fully observed both in person and by staff and contractors.
• Knowledge of Legionella and Asbestos management policies and ensure compliance.
• Maintain all routine safety checks around the site to include fire safety, daily risk assessments, visual survey of the trees and water maintenance to ensure the safety of all the people on the school site.
Management and Administration
• Purchase premises related equipment, supplies and services within agreed budgets, ensuring the best value as requested.
• To be responsible for contractors whilst on the school site and ensure works are carried out and completed to the required standard.
• Liaise with external cleaning staff to ensure a consistently high standard in the cleanliness of the school.
• Contribute to the review of school policies and procedures related to the premises function.
• To develop and maintain appropriate records systems, including OSHENS.
• Maintain an electronic calendar to ensure all scheduled maintenance tasks are recorded and can be shared with the Business Manager.
Whole-school organisation, strategy and development
• Contribute to the development, implementation and evaluation of the school’s policies, practices and procedures, so as to support the school’s values and vision.
• Make a positive contribution to the wider life and ethos of the school.
Professional development
• Help keep own knowledge and understanding relevant and up to date by reflecting on their own practice, liaising with school leaders, and identifying relevant professional development to improve personal effectiveness.
• Be proactive in taking opportunities to build the appropriate skills, qualifications, and/or experience needed for the role, with support from the school.
• Take part in the school’s appraisal procedures.
Personal and professional conduct
• Uphold public trust in the education profession and maintain high standards of ethics and behaviour, within and outside school.
• Have proper and professional regard for the ethos, policies and practices of the school, and maintain high standards of attendance and punctuality.

The above duties are not exhaustive and the post holder may be required to undertake tasks, roles and responsibilities as may be reasonably assigned to them by the Senior Leadership Team.
