Learning Support Assistant/Higher Level Teaching Assistant - Barley Lane School

  • Multiple Locations
  • Multiple Terms
  • £9.99 - £11.70 per hour (depending on experience)

Are you looking to move into a career in education with other additional benefits including:
• 175 days per year holiday (13 weeks per year every 6-7 weeks);
• Highly competitive pay and conditions and including tech benefits;
• Career development into QTLS and QTS (subject to budget, experience and expertise);
• Private insurance perks;
• Wellbeing services and support.

This is an exciting and unique opportunity to work alongside our team, to promote an alternative child-centred approach to meeting the needs of our pupils who have been identified as having complex needs.

You will need to have a positive mindset, combined with resilience and determination to improve outcomes.

You will need to be highly organised, pro-active, versatile and resilient. Knowledge and experience of working with pupils with SEND is desirable.

Responsibilities will include supporting a bespoke curriculum. This will require preparing provision alongside the teacher.

You will need to be flexible, patient, hardworking and committed to maximising learning opportunities for children. Experience of working with emotional needs would be desirable.

We are looking for someone who can inspire children and colleagues and who is willing to ‘go the extra mile’.

We can offer support from a successful team with regular high-quality professional development including child protection level 3 training, coaching and mentoring.

Previous experience is desirable but, most importantly, that you share our values: hard work, humility, kindness, friendship and optimism.

You will need to be an energetic, supportive and a positive team player, who has a sense of humour and excellent communication skills with a knowledge of SEN or a desire to develop them. ICT skills are essential and the flexibility to attend twilight training sessions on occasion. A willingness to contribute to the wider life of the school will be important. You must be willing to contribute to the continued improvement of our school in its journey from Good to Outstanding.

Barley Lane School is a day special school. The school provides education for up to 80 pupils aged 7-16 who benefit from small group and individualised learning. Although we are a small school that teaches to the national curriculum, we supplement this with nurture principles and the Boxall profile approach to develop healthy, happy, confident children who are ready and open to learning.

Are you hard-working, resilient, self-motivated, innovative and committed? Are you someone who wants to progress your career? If so, we are looking for someone with all those qualities and more - someone who is also prepared to go the extra mile.

Would you enjoy supporting children and young people, many with additional needs, in Maths or English, in cooking, outdoor education, Duke of Edinburgh, vocational college courses, 1:1, work experience and through personal challenge and celebration? If so, we are looking to recruit a flexible, calm, solution focused learning support assistant (LSA), who will support and mentor our brilliant and talented, but at times complex, children and young people who have a range of needs.

If you recognise that you possess these qualities then you could make a real difference to our students. Whilst previous experience in specialist education is desirable, it is more important to our community that you have strong values, preferably ones that align to our own - don’t worry about the skills - we’ll support and nurture them.

Why work for us?
• Our holistic approach to education with a focus on emotional and social development;
• The opportunity to make a positive difference to the lives of children who can be educationally overlooked;
• To work as part of a dedicated and supportive team who enjoy excellent CPD and career development opportunities;
• To experience a different ethos regarding education.

This position would suit a highly driven and passionate learning support assistant who is looking to have their skills valued and rewarded in a school that offers an exciting, diverse and challenging role, working to assist in the support and inclusion of students with special and additional learning needs. This is within a school that assists them in helping to build and develop their huge potential. Much of the work will be classed based, although we have an excellent curriculum offer accessing a variety of learning experiences and opportunities with many community partners (COVID currently impacting some of this). Any additional skill sets will also be welcomed.

We are seeking a suitably educated person, or at least able to evidence a strong desire to learn and improve. Good judgement is essential - you will be working closely with teachers and subject leaders to support learning in the primary and secondary units in class and in small groups; sometimes one to one, both in school and beyond.

We ask that all potential candidates carefully and honestly consider the “person specification” and also reflect on the “best practice” descriptors before applying.

It is your qualities and experience that interest us. All shortlisted candidates will be subject to an interview where their values are explored to promote and ensure safeguarding and any appointment subject to a DBS disclosure and references.

A full driving licence is preferred.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and vulnerable adults, and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.
This role requires a DBS disclosure.
This role requires the ability to fulfil all spoken aspects of the role with confidence and fluency in English.
